yaki tori – our “quick” home style

This is Delicious and Simple! All you need is:

  • Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs (we eat about 3 small each)
  • Soy Sauce or Tamari (best low sodium version)
  • Sugar (white not brown)
  • Lots of green onions (the thicker the better)
  • Shish Kabob Sticks (bamboo ones, soaked in water before grilling so no fire!)
For this very simplified version of Yaki tori…and a similar taste to Teriyaki Chicken, mix 1/2 part soy with 1/2 part sugar (yes, lots of sweet and salt in this marinade). Cut up the chicken thighs into small-ish pieces – shish kabob style.  Marinate chicken pieces in soy and sugar mix in fridge.
Chop the green onion 1 – 2 inches wide.  After marinating, alternate chicken piece-green onion piece…on bamboo sticks.
Heat up the grill (excellent), counter top electric grill (great), broiler or stove top pan (good, too).  Grill/cook the yaki tori / kabobs until the soy and sugar form nice brown caramelized outer surface and chicken if fully cooked.
The chicken and green onions will be soft and sweet. YUM!!!
